Waterton
On Sept. 23 we drove from Claresholm south on highway 2, in dense cloud and rain, to the turn off to Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump. I had intended to spend the whole day scooting along in the foothills (Highway 22), but it was so cloudy that you couldn't see the foothills. We spent the morning at Head Smashed In and then drove the backroads to Pincher Creek, through the ranchlands and windfarms. We arrived in Waterton to fresh, wet snow. Skippy decided that the snow she likes is warm and dry rather than wet and cold. We were greeted at Crandell Mountain Lodge by deer eating the hanging basket flowers and headed to Zum's for lunch. We drove around the campground to shoot the mule deer, headed to Red Rock Road and the buffalo paddock and ended our day shooting four families of rutting elk in the meadow by the horse stable.
Monday morning we got up for sunrise on the Red Rock Road - ever shot sunrise with only a 70 - 200mm? We drove to the canyon parking lot and on our way down found our first black bear. The day was full as we also found big horns, walked the shore trail at Cameron Lake, shot Stellar Jays and ended the day by finding both sunset and moonrise at the same spot.
Tuesday, we shot sunrise from the elk meadow, went in to town for breakfast and then laundry. We left Waterton for the US border at about noon in clear skies.
