From Lake Louise to Longview
The early morning of Sept. 22 was foggy and cold. Low clouds and the sound of rain kept us from going out at sunrise. We left Baker Creek after breakfast and went up to Lake Louise. As we drove up the mountain from the town, the sky cleared and revealed fresh snow on the upper elevations. We spent close to two hours on the shore of Lake Louise, capturing the changing clouds and melting snow.
We drove from Louise to Banff on the Bow Valley Parkway, rather than Highway 2, stopping at Hillside Meadow for the breathtaking aspens in the fog scene.
Banff townsite was stuffed full of people, as it was the annual Melissa's Road Race. We carried on to Canmore, also a beehive of activity. In Canmore we picked up Visible Dust Arctic Butterfly sensor cleaners, and had a great (and well priced) lunch. We left Canmore about 3 p.m., driving east on Highway 2 until Highway 40, and then proceeding south on Highway 40 through Kananaskis Country, stopping at Wedge Pond for great fall reflections, Peter Lougheed Provincial Park and on to Longview.
Longview is a great little town in the foothills, renowned for spectacular scenery and great beef jerkey. We got into town just at sunset, but the jerkey store was still open. We spent our day chasing photographs, and did not make it in time to visit Bar U Ranch - maybe next time!
Our final destination was Claresholm. The total distance covered this day was about 250 km, and we did it in 12 hours.
