Glacier Tuesday & Wednesday
We arrived at St. Mary Lodge about 2 p.m. on September 25. Several people were already there, milling in the lobby. Hugs for old friends and warm hello's for new ones. After we were able to check in, we headed out looking for wildlife, moose specifically, at the lake at the end of Many Glacier Road. We came upon a spot marked with 'no stopping for 1/4 mile' signs, and lots of parked vehicles. Turned out a grizzly sow and two yearling cubs were on the rock face above, with a goat carcass. My Grizzly photos are really lacking, but I did see them, if that counts.
Our first full day in Glacier was Wednesday the 25th and it started half an hour before sunrise at Wild Goose Island. The afternoon had us hike to St. Mary Falls and on to Victoria Falls. On the way to the falls, we encountered a female coyote. On the way back to the lodge, we found a black bear.
Later that afternoon, several vehicle loads set out for sweet evening light, The waiter had suggested Duck Road as a good spot for sunsets and wildlife - grizzlies and eagles nests. We were too early for sunset from outside of the mountain range, travelled along Duck Lake Road a while, and down some interesting back roads. This was the point at which others noticed I was reading the speed limit signs in kmh rather than mph. The decision was made to have supper at the Cattle Baron, and try to find sunset after that. Skippy and I shared a really delicious bison steak. We then stopped at the edge of private land (the property owner came to the gate, with a large dog on the roof of his truck) and set up to the sun setting behind the mountain range. It was beautiful, and my shots don't do it justice. Heading back to the lodge allowed us to stop for moonrise, and to watch for critters crossing the road - deer, cows and a horse!
